LCSW License #23800

Hello, my name is Tom LaGrave, and I’m a Licensed Clinical Social Worker helping youth and adults at Petaluma Family Therapy.

I am a former Navy SEAL, and on a personal note, have been in recovery from addiction for 28 years. I share this to demonstrate that I’ve “been there”, I have empathy toward those in recovery, and I’m living proof that hope exists.

During the most challenging times of my personal journey, I examined my years as a SEAL, and recalled the conditioning and mindset that led me to want to beat my addiction. My personal and professional experience has taught me that addiction can be conquered by accepting, at times embracing, a range of emotions, including emotional pain.

Experience

I began working with youth, transitioned to the developmentally disabled, convicts in correctional facilities, and finally with present day Special Forces Operators as a Military and Family Life Counselor (MFLC). In these roles, I observed the commonalities between PTSD, substance abuse, stress, conflict, depression, and anxiety. I’ve incorporated Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), and hypnosis as the models utilized in my therapeutic practice.
