Welcome! I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and the founder and director of Petaluma Family Therapy. I am honored to serve individuals and families in need in Sonoma County.

Some of the qualities I bring to therapy are openness, kindness, integrity, and a spirit of exploration.  Over the years, others have often appreciated my honesty, perseverance, and ability to challenge and help people re-work ineffective behaviors or beliefs.

My personal life journey informs the work I do, and I am able help people explore their circumstances from multiple perspectives. I was born in Zambia, Africa, and I have traveled to 26 countries, gaining experience with vastly different value systems and ways of life. People of diverse backgrounds and cultures feel welcome and accepted in the emotionally safe environment that I provide.

In addition to my work as a therapist, I am a musician and artist, and I am active in fitness, photography, and mountain sports.

Experience

I have been working with people in a helping capacity since 1999. In particular, I have many years of experience working with teens and young adults in both residential and outpatient settings.

During college I worked with teenagers in Burlington, Vermont directing youth programs. Later, while in graduate school in Los Angeles County, I worked as a trainee at SEEC/Citrus Counseling Center, providing weekly therapy as well as assisting court-mandated domestic violence treatment for adults. After graduate school, I worked as an intern at the Community Institute for Psychotherapy in Marin County and met weekly with individuals, couples, families and children. Also in Marin, I co-led group therapy with children in the Homeward Bound homelessness program and worked in Davidson Middle School’s counseling center.

After moving to Petaluma, I began intensive work with teenage boys in a residential treatment program. This challenging work included behavior management, conflict resolution, wilderness adventures, physical education, life-skills training, staff management, and group therapy. I also trained child-care workers to help teenage boys who were facing a variety of emotional, mental health, substance abuse and educational challenges.

In 2011 I opened a private practice in downtown Petaluma, and in 2015 I founded Petaluma Family Therapy, a network of licensed psychotherapists, to expand my work within the community through partnership with dedicated and skilled clinicians.

Theoretical Orientation

I have training and experience using a variety of theoretical orientations, and the way I work with each client or family depends greatly upon the needs of those involved, the goals of therapy, and the potential time frame. Some perspectives that may come into play are:

Family Systems, Psychodynamic, Solution-Focused, Cognitive-Behavioral, EMDR, Humanistic-Existential, Narrative, Mindfulness Meditation, Emotional Problem Solving, and Nonviolent Communication.
